Trump Said What ?!?

Republicans are criticizing President Trump after he mocked Christine Blasey Ford, the woman who says she was sexually assaulted by Brett Kavanaugh, Trump’s Supreme Court nominee. (Click here to read the article.) Trump ridiculed Ford at one of his rallies for not recalling certain details of the alleged assault that took place 36 years ago. (Click here to watch the video of Trump's statements at the rally.)

Republican Senators Jeff Flake and Susan Collins called Mr Trump's remarks “appalling” and “just plain wrong.” Flake also said that “There’s no time and no place for remarks like that. To discuss something this sensitive at a political rally is just not right … I wish he hadn't had done it.” Michael Bromwich, Ford's lawyer, described President Trump's words as “a vicious, vile and soulless attack” on Ford, adding, “Is it any wonder that she was terrified to come forward, and that other sexual assault survivors are as well?”

The words of the people who lead us - especially someone with as much power as the President of the United States - can very easily create borders within our communities and division within our country. However, words do not have to create division. In your opinion, how can Americans become less divided on this issue? What could President Trump have said differently about this issue that would have brought the two sides of this argument closer together rather than farther apart?

  1. As our leader, it is Trump’s responsibility to keep the peace in many situations. His open mocking of an alleged victim of sexual abuse divides the country, and rather than taking a side, no less the alleged abuser, he should have made a statement that was more in the middle. Trump has a bias towards Kavanaugh, as he nominated him to fill a position on the Supreme Court, and rather than making the choice to give his support to Kavanaugh, as he clearly favors him, he chose to make a negative statement and bring down the accuser. I think this is an issue that is hard for people to come together on, as the two sides are very opposite. There are those who either stand in support of Kavanaugh, and those who support Blasey Ford and very little who are in between. However, I think it is important to discuss each side in order for those on opposite sides to see a different perspective and thus make an informed stand for whomever they support, in order to become less divided.
